At the May 2007 Coffee Morning

By Krystyna Mallmann

Once again BIG members got together for their monthly coffee meeting at Sally Evans house who has kindly been a hostess of this event several times.

In her beautiful residence we gathered to learn about something we all love…gems! Our guest speaker was gemologist Aura Godoy, founder of Muzo Gemólogos Joyeros and graduate of Western Michigan University and GIA (Gemological Institute of America).

Aura shared a few rare and precious things with us about taking care of our jewelry. First of all gems have to be treated as we would like to be treated, with respect and caution.

Yes, we all agree that gems are beautiful and who wouldn’t want to wear them all day long but there are certain moments when it’s better not to do so. Those moments are activities such as cleaning, running, playing sports. Sure, your gold earrings can look great with your new tennis racket but you could loose them without noticing it. You also have to avoid changes of temperature since gems can crack or shatter, this means not using the oven with a new bracelet (just order delivery!).

When you take off your jewelry place them in soft material apart from each other, an earring on top of another could scratch the metal mounting and stones. It is also good to be cautious and check the prongs for sign of wearing and replace them before you loose your gems.

Another great tip that we learned is that we should avoid using hair spray, creams, perfumes and hair dryers while wearing jewelry because this can affect them. This means that jewels are the last thing you have to put on before leaving your house.

Pearls, that are very fashionable these days, are better not worn directly on skin in warm places because sweating can change them. By following this wonderful advice your jewelry can last forever, like diamonds do.

Afterwards Mr. Gilberto Martinez gave us a demonstration of reflexology and BIG Quilting Group raffled a beautiful quilt they just had finished. The Craft group was successful in selling their designs at rock bottom prices, producing a good profit for charity. We encourage new members to join us and enjoy our monthly meetings!
