April 2008 Coffee Morning

ORCHIDS

Our April Coffee morning was hosted by Nini Van Vliet. Her beautiful house overlooking Caracas was the perfect setting for our Orchid talk.

Our guest speaker was Mr. Henrique Graf, a world renowned horticulturist and a leading authority in orchids and bromeliads.

He explained that in order to buy an orchid, first of all one should go to an orchid nursery, and explain what kind of environment one has. Each orchid has specific growing requirements. If you do not buy the right one for your home, it simply will not thrive. He also gave us a description of the different varieties of orchids such as Vandas,  Phalaenopsis and Cattleyas among others. The beautiful Cattleya orchid happens to be the Venezuelan national flower, also known as “Flor de Mayo”. Mr. Graf explained what to look for when choosing an orchid, then talked about the importance of fertilizing with the correct fertilizer and watering appropriately. He also brought some beautiful orchids for us to look at.

B.I.G. is planning as an Activity a trip to Graf´s nursery to see his incredible selection of plants.

There was also a request to B.I.G. members by Judi and Nini if they could look around for baby sleepers to donate. The organization OSMAN (Obra Social para Madres e Niños) really needs them! This organization is a home for unwed girls age 11-18 who are having their first babies. This home is run (under very strict rules!) by 10 to 12 nuns in San Martin in Caracas. So please, if you have any left from your kids or anyone else...

And of course we also had interesting vendors this time. Next coffee morning will be without any vendors because that will take place at a Persian rug store!

Hope to see you there!
