June 2008 Coffee Morning Akanan Tours and Adventure
The Coffee Morning was kindly hosted by our President Nicola Loosley at her lovely home. The speaker was Juan Carlos Ramirez, founder and director of the Akanan Travel and Adventure company. He is a pioneer of low impact adventure travel; he has forged trails through Venezuela´s densest jungles and climbed all its highest mountains. His passion for nature has led him to remote places as Alaska, China, Patagonia, Cambodia, Nepal and Australia among others. He began working for Venezuela´s leading scientific explorer Charles Brewer Carías organizing scientific expeditions to the Amazonas region. When he is not on an expedition, Juan Carlos is busy taking tourists around the country with Akanan Travel and Adventure, the company he founded 17 years ago. In the 25 years that he has been organizing trips into the most inhospitable jungles in Venezuela Juan Carlos has learned how to live off the land. His teachers have been the indigenous people who call the forest home, and he has learnt that there are few things that walk, crawl or swim that cannot be eaten.
During his talk he gave illustrated examples of various types of trips: To relax he suggested beach trips to Los Roques, Los Testigos, La Tortuga island and the Mochima National Park. These destinations offer sailing, scuba diving and river rafting for water lovers. Trips to Los Llanos at the center of Venezuela are an ideal destination for bird watchers and nature lovers. The area around Barquisimeto offers shopping for local crafts such as wood carvings and pottery. Angel falls and Canaima, plus adventure trips to Roraima and the Autana Tepui are experiences you will never forget. Also the Andes region is another area to explore.
