March 2008 Coffee Morning

Art Exhibition

Our March coffee morning was at the beautiful home of Margot Antola.

Our speaker was Esteban Araujo - the master of making the subject of art simple and enjoyable.

He spoke about Venezuelan art in general from its evolution in the 1800s to modern day.

Picasso is the best example to questions such as “What makes a good artist?” and “When you do not confuse one artist from another as each has their own style . . . authenticity?”. . . When we see a Picasso we know without a shadow of a doubt that the painting is a Picasso.

Esteban mentioned the great Venezuelan masters such as Zapata - the political cartoonist; Oswaldo Vigas (who met Picasso in 1957 in France.); Julio Pacheco; Jose Campos Biscardi; Rafael Barrio; and the black prince, Rolando Pena who is authentic and controversial at the same time.

All of these above artists have lived and/or studied in New York and France for an extended period of time. Therefore, since the 1950s Venezuelan art has evolved and is now recognized worldwide.
Last November/December 2007 there was an exhibition of the great masters at New York University. Included among these was Jesus Soto, whose round sculptures create illusions in his art.

Sometimes we see two and three dimensions in art specifically seen in the sculptures of Cruz Diez, an artist who created his personal interpretation of kinetecism, Joaquin Torres Garcia who is a constructive artist and Arturo Otero. Art is what it means to you, not to others.

Currently, there are so many young up and coming artists in Venezuela. There will always be good and bad art in Venezuela and worldwide.

On behalf of The British and International Group of Caracas we would like to thank Esteban Araujo for such an interesting and enlightening introduction to Venezuelan artists. Thanks also to Margot´s husband for his excellent translation of Esteban´s talk.

So, this was a very interesting coffee morning and we are looking forward to see you at the April Coffee Morning where we will have an interesting speaker again!
